Nijinomatsubara is a Japanese black pine forest, which is about 1 km wide and 5 km long, along the coast of the Genkainada Sea. This forest was made to protect the land from salty wind and storm surge by Terasawa Shimanokami, the domain lord of Karatsu Province, about 360 years ago. In the Edo period, the forest was called “Nirinomatsubata (pine forest of 3.6 km long)” or “Mimatsubara (precious pine forest)”, but it was given the present name in about 1990s. At the present Route 202 runs through the forest and a lot of people from all over the country come to enjoy this scenic beauty. You will be impressed by the natural arch made of the pine branches. You can also enjoy the elegant curve of the white sand beach facing Karatsu Bay below your eyes and the landscape of Mt. Kagami in your back.
