|
Daikozenji Temple is located at the southern foot of Mt. Chigirizan at the eastern end of the Sefuri Mountain Range, Saga Pref. The temple is also called “Komatsu Kannon” after the name of the village it is located, or “The Temple of Azalea” because it is a notable place for azalea. This temple with a long history belongs to the Tendai sect. It temple is said to have been established in 717 by the monk Gyoki. The azalea trees, which were first planted in around 1923, has increased in number and now there are 50,000 azalea trees forming one of the most famous azalea gardens in the country. From the end of April through the beginning of May every year the azaleas burst into bloom with spectacular beauty. Especially the azaleas that cover the whole hillside in back of the temple are gorgeous. This spot is called “Hitome-Ichimanbon,” which means you can see 10,000 azaleas at a glance. They look like a huge flower carpet. Autumn leaves are also wonderful. The scenic red leaves against the old thatch roof are really impressive.
