佐嘉神社 Saga-jinja Saga Shrine

Saga Shrine in Saga City, Saga Pref. is known as a deity of study. Built in 1933, it enshrines the ruler of virtue, Naomasa Nabeshima, the tenth lord of Saga Clan and his son, Naohiro. Naomasa greatly contributed to the opening of the modern Japan by taking in the Western culture as early as in the late Edo period and set up an artillery producing plant and produced Western-style iron cannon for the first time in Japan. He also contributed to establishment of modern education system and introduction of modern medicine. In the precinct of the shrine, the remanufactured cannons and steam locomotive are displayed. Every spring and autumn, the festival named “Nippo-san” is held to pray for rich harvest, business success, and the world peace. Japanese tea and flowers are solemnly dedicated to the deities, while various folk performing arts are played on the festival stage.
