This drum performance was started in 1985 as an attempt to combine traditional culture and creation of new culture. The name “Ryujin” comes from the legend of Ryujin (dragon god) associated with the Nishishiiya Waterfall, one of the city’s three fine waterfalls. The founders of this performance wished the drum would sound beyond time and space like a legendary creature of a dragon. Playing the drums has profound implications in that everyone can empathize with the drum sounds because drum beats synchronize with our heart beats. The members of Ryujin-daiko Preservation Association are creating dramas while they are beating the drums. Hoping that their performance will develop into further succession and creation of the culture, the members continue to beat the drums with the motto of “Always with heart and soul.”
