川古の大楠 Kawakono-ookusu The Big Camphor Tree in Kawako

This camphor tree in Kawako, Takeo City, Saga Pref., is the 5th biggest tree in Japan. It is said that among the giant camphor trees in Japan this tree has the most dignified air. It has been known for a long time as one of the Three Fine Camphor Trees in the country. This 3000-year-old tree is 33 meters in root coverage, 25 meters in height, 21 meters in trunk circumference, and the longest branch reaches as far out as 27 meters. It is also a nationally designated Protected Species. It is said that a Buddhist priest Gyoki sculpted an image of Buddha on the trunk of this tree about 2000 years ago, but it grew so vigorously that the image had disappeared as the time went by. In front of this dignified tree, we can do nothing but stand overwhelmed by mysterious vitality
